TOSOH uses captured CO2 as a feedstock for MDI and HDI production

TOSOH Corporation (Tosoh) has begun using captured carbon dioxide (CO2) at its Nanyo plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, to produce isocyanates in line with its decarbonization efforts.

A Tosoh spokesperson said on November 14 that the company's new plant, which can capture 40,000 tons/year of CO2 and use it to produce carbon monoxide (CO), began operations this month after completion at the end of October.

Before converting CO2 to CO, Tosoh will capture CO2 from conventional facilities that use naphtha to make CO, a raw material used to make isocyanate products such as diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Isocyanates can be used to make polyurethanes.

Due to the adoption of a new source of CO raw materials, the use of naphtha has been significantly reduced.

It is reported that Tosoh produces 400,000 tons of MDI and 43,000 tons of HDI per year at the Nanyo plant.

Tosoh Corporation has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% in the fiscal year April 2030-March 2031 from 8.33 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in fiscal 2018-2019, and achieving carbon neutrality in fiscal 2050-2051.

The company plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3% by fiscal 2030-2031 by converting carbon dioxide into petrochemical raw materials.
