Teijin Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Prepreg and New Lightweight Applications for PC Products

On July 29, Teijin (TEIJIN) of Japan announced that the company's Tenax™TPCL (a carbon fiber thermoplastic prepreg) and its polycarbonate (PC) Panlite® Sheet products were used by VAIO for the shell of the world's lightest portable display VAIO Vision+™, which weighs about 325 grams and is about 3.9 mm at its thinnest point.

Among them, Tenax™ TPCL intermediates, used for the top and bottom layers of the VAIO Vision+™ shell sandwich, are a sheet material made of woven carbon fibers impregnated with thermoplastic resin. It is lightweight, heat-resistant, impact-resistant, strong, and meets the flame retardant requirements of electrical products.

Panlite® sheet, made of PC resin and used for the middle layer, has excellent dimensional stability, is lightweight, and has good impact resistance.

Reduce carbon emissions and simplify manufacturing

Compared to the traditional housing that uses metal parts for assembly and needs to be installed during the manufacturing process, the housing structure of the new display uses a design in which Panlite® film is sandwiched between Tenax™ TPCL layers, which can achieve the connection shape and strength required for assembly without metal parts.

This material solution enables the manufacture of complex three-dimensional shapes in a single molding step, helping to reduce the steps required to manufacture the housing and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTP) refer to a new type of thermoplastic composite material that is lightweight, high-strength, high-rigidity, high-toughness, and recyclable, which is formed by processes such as resin melt impregnation and extrusion with thermoplastic resin as the matrix and continuous fiber as the reinforcement.

Compared with thermosetting composites, CFRTP has the advantages of simple molding process and short cycle, unlimited raw material storage, and recyclable recycling. It is widely used in aerospace, transportation, automotive industry, electronics and electrical, sports and leisure, and other fields, and has become a hot spot for research and development of composite materials companies at home and abroad in recent years.
