SABIC innovative films help electric vehicle capacitors achieve new breakthroughs

With the popularity of electric vehicles around the world, the technical requirements of key components are also constantly increasing. In particular, the performance of traditional film capacitors in high temperature environments is often unsatisfactory, and it is difficult to meet the high temperature environment requirements of silicon carbide technology in inverter modules, thus failing to give full play to the full advantages of wide bandgap semiconductors silicon carbide and gallium nitride.

Faced with this challenge, SABIC innovatively launched ELCRES™ HTV150A high temperature/high voltage capacitor film. Nichicon Corporation of Japan has developed high temperature, high voltage, commercial grade capacitors for electric vehicle DC-to-AC traction inverter modules using this ultra-thin specialty film. This technological breakthrough helps improve the efficiency of DC-to-AC power modules, meets the industry's demand for advanced film capacitors, and provides a new solution for improving the performance of electric vehicles.

SABIC ELCRES HTV150A capacitor film is the industry's first film that can provide stable performance at operating temperatures of -40°C to 150°C and frequencies up to 100kHz. It can also provide stable capacitance values, excellent insulation resistance and good dielectric properties, thus filling the key technical performance gap that traditional film solutions cannot meet for applications above 105°C.

Currently, SABIC ELCRES HTV150A capacitor film has successfully achieved its first commercial application and has become a key material for the new high-temperature/high-voltage film capacitor developed by Nichicon Corporation of Japan, which is designed for DC-to-AC inverter modules for electric vehicles. This new film capacitor can help the electric vehicle industry improve the range, charging speed and overall performance of electric vehicles, while achieving a more compact and lightweight module design by reducing the need for active cooling.
