SABIC will showcase its growing range of LNP ELCRES FST copolymer resins for large train interior applications at InnoTrans 2024 in Hall 255, Stand 5.1. The portfolio covers a range of compounds that may be used for extrusion, thermoforming and injection molding. LNP THERMOCOMP compounds are ideal for 3D printing of large interior and exterior rail parts. These specialty thermoplastic products meet the stringent fire safety specifications of European Standard (EN) 45545-2 for flame, smoke and toxicity (FST) with R1 requirements and the highest hazard levels HL2 and HL3 for rail applications.
“We have expanded our LNP ELCRES FST resin range with new grades R1-HL2/HL3 that meet the highest safety requirements of international rail standards to meet the growing demand for train interior materials that combine uncompromising fire safety with aesthetics, cost-effectiveness and recyclability,” explained Maureen MacDonald Stein, director, portfolio strategy and marketing, SABIC Polymers Specialties BU.
SABIC highlighted the superior performance benefits of LNP ELCRES FST materials by showcasing multiple commercial applications, prototypes and demonstration parts.
LNP ELCRES FST copolymers offer distinct advantages over stamped metals, thermosets and glass, such as greater design freedom, reduced system costs, 20% weight savings and easier end-of-life recycling. Their custom coloring capabilities in a wide range of opaque shades can eliminate painting. In addition, the resins’ excellent chemical resistance helps reduce environmental stress cracking caused by aggressive cleaning agents.
The LNP ELCRES FST product expansion builds on the success of SABIC’s first injection molding grade introduced two years ago to meet the R6-HL2 seat component specification. The new R1-HL2/HL3 compatible grades, FST2734E and FST2733E respectively, also include extrusion compounds for large interior wall cladding components, partitions and complex window masks.
In addition, SABIC also demonstrated a luggage rack based on R1/HL3 clear LNP ELCRES FST3403T resin and an external front hatch cladding component 3D printed with R1/HL3 LNP THERMOCOMP AM DC0041XA51 compound. This additive manufacturing compound can help rail networks minimize lead times and inventory for large interior and exterior replacement parts.
